Our Story

About Dbuntu

We are Dbuntu, and this is our story...

  • 2015

    The Dream of Dbuntu

Alvin Mbabazi and Brent Mandelkorn grew up 8,000 miles apart, but came to Trinity with two things in common: They both wanted to start a business, and they both live and breathe dairy.

  • 2016

    Boots on Ground

In the summer of 2016, the two roomates travelled to Uganda with big dreams to disrupt Uganda's Agriculture Industry with modern farming methods and technology. They spent time with farmers on ground, learning and better understanding the market dynamics, and the challenges faced.

  • 2017

    An Idea is Born

From that partnership, Dbuntu was born. This startup was originally an online data platform designed to help dairy farmers make smarter, more data-driven decisions by offering a series of smartphone and web apps that allowed dairy farmers to keep track of how much milk their livestock is producing.

  • 2018

    Product Launch

After raising $21,500 from venture competitions in 2017, and graduating in May 2018, Alvin moved to Uganda full-time to lead the vision and direction of Dbuntu on ground. In July 2018, Dbuntu launched their first solution (Dbuntu Cattle ) to market, and was implemented on a select group of mid-sized early-adopter farms.

  • 2019

    Practical Realities

Coming face-to-face with the challenging realities of selling a software in a developing economy with a low user adoption rate for technology, the team set its focus on finding alternative product-market fits and building out a profitable business model based on fundamentals and economic sustainability.
